One mentioned my “immodest picture.” And there was more:

“Whatever happened to not condoning things like that? I’m not trying to be ugly at all, but I just thought someone kinda needed to speak out in respect of the Lord and what it means to be Christ-like. I don’t really think looking and talking like that is it.”

I tried not to let that bother me, but it did. But this comment bothered me even more:

“Because it’s been mentioned, I also want to comment on ST’s use of profanity. I do really enjoy her blog, but I haven’t added her to my blogroll because of her “word choices”. Not that she’d care, she has enough readers w/o my recommendation. I just tried to ignore the profanity until she wrote that she was a “Christian”. I’ve never looked at her blog the same way since. This is not to pick on Lindsay, I think she’s really sweet and talented. But I do think we have a responsibility as Christian bloggers. We need to represent Christ.”

Don’t think the word Christian put in italics was lost on me.

Ouch.

When this same commenter goes on to mention how she cried upon hearing Suburban Turmoil had found Christianity, Suburban has some tears, thoughts, and emotions of her own. She shares with her readers NOT to start a flame war or attack on her critics, but a dialogue. She herself is struggling with right and wrong, she freely shares, with what’s authentic, and where she fits into the world and where religion (in her case, Christianity) fits in with her life.

I think about authenticity a lot. As Suburban asks, I think a lot, not just in matters of faith, am I doing this because I AM or because I “want to be seen as someone who…”

Mostly what drew me to Suburban’s blog and to this post in particular is a common interest in investigating, learning and peeling and seeing more and more, for good, bad or indifferent, discovering who we are, who others are and how those fit together.

I am curious… where are the areas where you struggle with authenticity? With image vs. reality? What are the times when you feel most you? To me, it is in good deep conversations… like this one.

religion, Christianity, heathen, authenticity, love, life, you, love, life, authenticity, reality, Christianity, religion, judgement, judging, friend, investigating, exploring, journalist, writing, words,

Powered by ScribeFire.

In continuing to review some old-school lessons (want to write?
