They sell… you guessed it: cupcakes! Yes, they’re pricey; yes, they are the kind of thing I might blog about as being the worst kind of emperor’s-new-clothes pretentious (ohh I HAVE to have that $3.00 cupcake! in the brown box tied up with string!)

But

I DO have to have it. Hello Cupcake’s cakes are pretty. They have pretty names (Peanut Butter Blossom, Peppermint Penny, De Lime and De Coconut); they have pretty colors (Easter egg pinks and greens and buttercreamy white and tan); and yes, they come in pretty brown boxes with pink stickers.

And

they’re delicious.

So… I’ve started a new tradition. Every Wednesday when I go to my Regularly Scheduled Appointment, I bring back cupcakes (sometimes 4, sometimes 6) to deserving fellow workerbee pals. Because let’s face it, someone could ALWAYS use a cupcake.

Response has been amazing. In the last few weeks I’ve given cupcakes to:

* Pals finishing hellatious, hellatious jobs that have literally taken years and are finally finishing up

* Teary pals, struggling to balance work and life and work and life and work and…

* Unappreciated pals, quietly going “above and beyond” without fanfare or applause

* Pals who’ve gone to bat for others (sometimes for me) when they didn’t have to, when it would have been easier not to

* Pals who care about what’s right and do it, even when it comes at a cost

* Pals who are having a rainy blue day

*Pals who deserve to be celebrated.

*Pals who had their car stolen. Again. And then returned right before the insurance money came. Again.

Sometimes the cupcake-getter fits all these cupcake-worthy categories, sometimes just one, and sometimes I just see them in the hall and think: you!

It is the best feeling, being the cupcake fairy. So I’ve decided to repeat the favor online. Virtual cupcakes may not be as delicious but they come from the heart, so the intent and good feelings are the same, and today’s go to:

3 Amys, of varying degrees of known-ness to me:

Amy #1: is deep in my heart though we don’t talk or see each other much anymore. We met at freshman orientation and it was love at first sight, from one giggle, one shared smile. Tears and picnics outside, and years, and husbands, and boyfriends, and good choices and bad choices, and pleas for help, and mostly TALKING whether lying in the blue grass or on the phone across the country or ocean: Amy, this cupcake is for you!

Amy #2: I’ve never met but I’ve loved her for making me laugh and cackle and think and LAUGH, deep belly laugh, mean girl but not mean just smart and quick and witty laugh since first encountering her through good pal, Suz (oh wait, Suz, you totally get a cupcake too!) , who passed along this bit o hillarity in the form of John Mayer-Why I hate him (note for “some crazy reason” Nerve is not allowed at work, open at home kids, it’s FUNNY). Now Amy and Suz and I are keeping each other sane exchanging political and sometimes personal (everybody reads the blog guys, no comments on that sphere here please) emails all the livelong day in these trying times. Amy now has a blog here. Read it/love it/inhale it (especially if you’re a writer. or pregnant. or a pregnant writer. or … just read it!)

Amy #3 I’ve never met. But I love what she’s doing here. (Watch “The beckoning of lovely” and cry and laugh and watch it again and then submit your lovely made things to Amy here: missamykr@yahoo.com PLEASE INCLUDE YOUR NAME, AGE, AND COUNTRY. You may also send through standard mail: Amy Krouse Rosenthal, 222 N. What deserves a cupcake more than that lovely thought?

Cheers, see you next week for more cupcakes, lovely people. Happy cupcakes till then!
