Get Out of SATC card prompts ranting on why this show’s final episode succccked
John Kass’s free “Get out of SATC card” for men in the Chicago Tribune reminded me of my many, many, many rants on this show. (And yes, John, I’m a young(ish) female reader.)
As a woman, and a woman who sure watched some of the episodes, had a chuckle or two, I too can see the insipidness of this show. Another thing, it’s about the LEAST feminist female-empowering thing on the planet.
I could write a book (some have I’m sure) but among my SATC gripes… the last episode! Seriously! are you bonkers? here’s what it told me and other young women…
Carrie: I love love love the city, the city will be my man! Writing will be my love!
Carrie (five minutes later): Eh, screw my writing career, I’m moving to Paris to be a ballet dancer’s wife.
Carrie (another five minutes later): What?? Leave my life? no way. Grrrrl power. I’m going back to nyc where I belong! The city is my love
Carrie (yet ANOTHER five minutes later): What? Big getting out of a limo. Carry me away Prince Charming! Yayayaya. I don’t have to be a writer or pretend the city is my love anymore. I’ve gotta man. see ya bee-atches!
Hmmph. To me, this is a little like the feeling I had when showing up on “35 and single by choice” (or something like that’s) website to be greeted with “Surprise! This web site has taken a turn! I’m pregnant with twins, married, and quit my job! Yay!”
Stay tuned. Next week (just to drive up traffic) I plan to riff on the five million (or so) kids’ books that are better than Harry Potter. Yep, prepare your angry lashbacks now!

A ballet dancer’s wife? Ha ha! Technically he was a crabby artist on the show, who thought his poo smelled like roses.
You should read my many musings on Harry Potter.

I totally get your point, but I think it is ultimately feminist in nature because she has the choice – to love Big, to go to Paris (which has computers, too), to be fickle. I think a reason why so many women feel disconnected from feminism is because they feel they should not want to have the Big love or want to consider a man in their lives and how he may matter. It is all about the choice with me. That is what makes a feminist in my opinion.

Interesting points, Lara. I agree that feminism should be about choice. I just thought the WAY these particular women made these choices fell to the worst of a “girly girl” stereotype, as though those other choices are just things we pretend until TrueLove comes along, which I agree with you, COULD legitimately be a woman’s fair and feminist choice. It just somehow left me feeling that the show saying this was THE choice, the right one, the one the heroine makes (not that slutty samantha, or the closed off Career Gal). And as for Paris, yep, they HAVE computers etc. but… she wasn’t using them, or even discussed potentially using them much.
Anyway, thanks all for your VERY thoughtful, provocative emails and discussion. When ranting about this to my friends, I usually insert a few more caveats. I did watch the show and even laugh sometimes (like when Carrie’s Mac breaks and her bf’s like ‘you backed up right?’) and at other points, I was touched, but… I guess I wished they portrayed a WRITER like MY writer friends, tough and strong and smart and pretty and fun, yes, but not all about shoes she can’t afford or… you know… herself. Hmm… I’m ranting again.
