Freedom From Face(book)

Given the ennui I’d been feeling, the cabin fever (I mean a week in the cabin, great,  but that 9th or 10th day starts hurting….), I could see it starting.  I was on a superslick luge track to gold medal snarkery.

Sure, I was proud. I mean this is what I trained for, right? My years apprenticing at the snarktory, my nights by the fire practicing my craft. Don’t get me wrong. I was up for it. I know my abilities to sear veins with vitriol, microsurgery to the heart of the heart. (Oh, did I mention? Scorpio! In my soul.)

And plus, I was Right. About every. single. thing. Every Facebook argument anyone implied (by breathing, coughing, not breathing, not coughing) they wanted to have.  And I was ready to battle.  Think  Lost is the world’s best TV show;  blue your favorite color, Beyonce, the world’s best singer??  Uh, no. Incorrect. FAIL. You suck. Lemme tell you why. In 27 points.

Think you know the most about snowflakes, government shut downs, politics, movies. You don’t.

I do. And I can’t bear to let you think so for a minute. Why? Because you’re wrong. WRONG!!!

But the thing was all this rightness wasn’t making me less blue, nor less tired, nor more proud. It was just making me mean. and tired. and empty.

I sat watching the scrolling letters of facebook / twitter/ blog feeds / email/ texts… I felt my teeth clench, knuckles tighten into a ball, eyes strain and bluegray washing over all the very rightness and joy and success I thought I’d been wanting to celebrate.

And suddenly, rising over the foggy, snarky, venomous place, Read the rest of this entry »

Facebook, will you stop at nothing?

So, today’s “random” facebook ad was a departure from the slew of “lose weight for your wedding” themed missives. (Thanks Facebook! runs off in a huff, slamming doors and crying.)

Nope, today, facebook was telling me I needed vagisoft. MUCCCHHH better right? Well yes and no. it’s not what you’re thinking. or is it? Well, anyway, apparently vagisoft is pants (soylent green is people) and they are really really REALLY soft, according to their website, THE CORDAROUNDS BLOG, which, in fact, declares them

softer than a silkworm’s anus.

Seriously. That’s what it said.
And then they illustrated it, here: Read the rest of this entry »

Like the Interweb? Like Money? You’ll love 30DC

So this one goes out to all my bloggy pals, wanna-be-bloggers, those who like any of the following things: money, the interweb, blogging, internet marketing.

Nope I get nothing for this. Nope, there’s no cost, charge, catch or other craziness. This is simply a program started by now Internet Supastahs, Ed Dale and Dan Raines to teach we newbies about internet marketing.

The Thirty Day Challenge

What’s the challenge: You will make $10 online in 30 days. (Okay 31, who’s counting?)

[Caption]

Why am I telling you? I stumbled upon this a little over a month ago. I literally can’t remember how. I signed up, did the “preseason” and learned a TON (how to use social marketing tools like twitter, friendfeed; how to find people out in cyberspace with like interests/goals, professional backgrounds; the best way to keep track of all the blogs I like to read, how to start thinking about a blog on my own domain, launching a podcast, employing video.) Besides which I “met” some great friends (and a hillarious, patient, great teacher in Ed Dale, Australian web-preneur. And have participated in some wonderful conversations about the future of journalism, new media, old media, Washington, writing (my personal interests or “niches.”) You could do the same for whatever you’re into.

Yes, these guys have a product that the “rest of the year” they try to sell, but not in August. Not to you. Nor will I.

Thirty day challenge starts today, August 1. I recommend perusing the pre-season cheat sheet, joining the forums and letting me know you’re there, too. It can be a bit overwhelming

Can’t wait to see ya there.
